Join us in Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado for the 20th Anniversary of IABS! This beautiful setting resonates with the conference theme, and we believe this will be both an educational and an enjoyable experience for all. Here’s some of what you can expect: Thursday, June 18 Welcome to Aspen/Snowmass! Our conference opens with some fun outdoor activities you may choose from for Thursday. Perhaps you’d be interested in an all-day excursion that will include a beautiful trip over the pass with gorgeous views, followed by several hours of whitewater rafting. Maybe you’re into doing a three-hour hike through U.S. Forest Service lands or a two-hour horseback ride that includes a visit to a local monastery. Or perchance you’ll join the group that’s doing a four-hour tour of the Maroon Bells, possibly the most well-known local landmark. A registration form for pre-conference activities can be accessed by clicking here. Then join other IABS members at the Roof Garden for drinks (two free tickets) and munchies at our kickoff reception in the late afternoon / early evening. Catch up with old friends, and meet new ones! You might be able to make a meal of it, but most folks get a small group together and go out for dinner. Friday, June 19 The day begins with a continental breakfast at the Silvertree Conference Center, followed by conference sessions comprising papers, discussions, symposia, and workshops. After a brief break mid-morning, we’ll continue with sessions until lunch. You may wish to order an optional boxed lunch when you register for the conference and take it with you on your afternoon jaunt. For the afternoon, enjoy a selection of outdoor activities arranged just for IABS attendees. Take some time to connect with the conference theme, “Thinking like a mountain: Nature, humans, and management.” Few of us have this sort of opportunity to experience nature as unspoiled as it is in the Snowmass area. We’ll have some time to reflect on these experiences on Saturday morning. A registration form for pre-conference activities can be accessed by clicking here. The evening is yours to do with as you wish. Maybe you’ll take a free bus trip to Aspen, only about a 15-minute ride away. Or enjoy dinner at one of the nearby restaurants in Snowmass. Saturday, June 20 Wake up with some juice, coffee, a muffin, and some fresh fruit. Oh, and don’t forget the conversation! We encourage everyone to join us in a reflection activity focusing on how our Thursday and Friday activities might inform our own perspectives on human economic and social pursuits, how we might better engage our students with the natural environment, and how we might consider bringing nonhuman nature into our research. Further, how can we keep alive these thoughts in our discussions throughout the rest of this conference, so that we go home with new ideas and inspiration? After a quick coffee break, we’ll take our new-found insights about the natural environment to a set of conference sessions, which promise an array of topics to interest everyone. The 20th Anniversary Luncheon with the Fellows (past IABS presidents, many of whom have been with the organization since it began) will offer delicious food … and food for thought about our field, past, present, and future. Another interesting set of sessions follows lunch, and then after a beverage break, the all-important annual business meeting. Hear what IABS has been up to since last year. Meet our new Operations Manager. Find out who got elected to leadership positions. Discover where next year’s conference will be. Learn what’s been going on with our quarterly journal Business & Society. You’ll have some time to get ready for the evening maybe even take a short nap and then it’s on to the annual banquet. We’ll be enjoying a delicious medley of organic and local foods at Bumps restaurant at the Buttermilk ski resort, about a 20-minute drive from the Silvertree. The views are breathtaking, and you won’t want to stick to your diet! Sunday, June 21 Grab a Danish pastry, a glass of juice, and a hot tea, or even a canned soda if you prefer. Then help your colleagues think more deeply and broadly about their research in our final two sets of conference sessions Sunday morning. None of us will want to leave this beautiful country, so we invite you to stick around for an optional lunch and some further conversation. Maybe you’ll even want to stay longer and take time to get in another hike, some golf, or even fly fishing. The official conference ends at noon, though, and we’ll bid each other adieu … until next year! |
